This session will address strategies for overcoming challenges with the physical arrangement of the orchestra caused by venue shortcomings, with the goal of maintaining a healthy individual student posture and optimal ensemble results. We will invite the session attendees to share their own experiences of setup challenges and solutions, concluding in a rich discussion of experiences from a variety of settings.
Selim Giray
- Biographical Information
Selim Giray is Director of Orchestral Studies at the University of Mississippi. Between 2007 and 2015, he served as Concertmaster of the Ohio Light Opera. Recently he performed and offered master classes at the Florida State University, Louisiana State University, Istanbul Technical University, and University of China in Beijing. Dr. Giray presented at The Midwest Clinic, ASTA National Conference, and performed two recitals at Carnegie Hall. As a doctoral candidate at the Florida State University, Giray studied with Eliot Chapo, former Concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra.
Kasia Bugaj is an Assistant Professor of String Music Education in the College of Music at The Florida State University. She received her Ph.D. in Music Education from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. Prior to her appointment at Florida State University, Dr. Bugaj taught elementary strings in Indiana. At FSU, she teaches string techniques and methods courses and the graduate historical research seminar; she also teaches at the FSU Summer Music Camps.
