A Little Bit of...Pace...Time: Getting the Most from Your Orchestra Rehearsals

Clinic Synopsis:

Teachers rarely believe that they have enough time in front of their ensembles to achieve all of their goals. This session will explore various strategies and methods for maximizing both rehearsal time and the "impact value" with students of all ages and abilities.

James Mick - Biographical Information

Dr. James Mick is an associate professor of music education at Ithaca College in upstate New York. He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in string pedagogy, orchestral rehearsal techniques, instrumental conducting, psychology of music teaching, and contemporary ensembles. An active conductor and clinician, Dr. Mick has been invited to work with students in a variety of settings ranging from individual school and all-district events to all-county and all-state honor festivals. Recent and upcoming all-state orchestra appearances include Alabama, Florida, Georgia, New York, Ohio, and Wyoming. Additionally, Dr. Mick is the music director of the Rochester Philharmonic Youth Orchestra and the past music director of the Ithaca Community Orchestra. Dr. Mick has given professional presentations at a number of local, state, and national conferences across the country. Dr. Mick’s research interests include music preferences, performance perceptions, and string instrument vibrato. His scholarly work has been published in several regional and national journals including recent articles in Bulletin for the Council of Research in Music Education, Contributions to Music Education, Music Educators Journal, and String Research Journal. He also recently completed a book chapter for the Oxford Handbook of Preservice Music Teacher Education in the United States published by Oxford University Press. In addition to his scholarly work, Dr. Mick serves as president of the New York State chapter of the American String Teachers Association (NYASTA). Originally a native of Kansas, Dr. Mick has taught elementary and middle school orchestra in Texas, and high school orchestra and jazz in New York. He holds degrees in Music Education from Florida State University (Ph.D.), Ithaca College (M.M.), and Texas Christian University (B.M.E.).
