From Greenwillow to Green Bushes in Five Years

  • Many quality band directors often lack the tools to elevate their programs above the average middle school band. We live only year to year and lack a long-term plan. Staffing, scheduling, facilities, instrumentation, fundamental exercises, literature choices, planning of rehearsals, etc. all factor into your goals. You must grow your program in numbers and tangible successes to advocate openly for more of what you need to help you achieve your long-term goals. Play the long game.

  • Nathaniel Neugent is Director of Bands at T.A. Howard Middle School in Mansfield ISD. His duties at Howard include conducting the Honor Band and assisting with the Symphonic and Concert Bands. Under his direction, the Howard Honor Band has been a five-time CCC State Honor Band finalist placing in the top seven each time with their highest placement as First Runner-Up in 2017-2018. They have been awarded the Mark of Excellence National Wind Bands Honors nine years. Mr. Neugent has continued the long tradition of UIL Sweepstakes Awards with the T.A. Howard Honor and Symphonic Bands earning First Division ratings 11 years in a row. In addition, the T.A. Howard Concert Band is one of just a few Sub Non-Varsity middle school bands state-wide to receive multiple Sweepstakes trophies. This past year, the Howard Honor Band received their most prestigious honor to date, being invited to perform at the 2017 Midwest International Clinic.

Mr. Neugent was previously the Director of Bands at Creekview High School in Carrollton, TX where his bands consistently earned superior ratings in UIL competition. The Mustang Marching Band advanced to the 5A State Marching Contest in 2002 and 2004, and were Bands of America Regional Finalists multiple times. Mr. Neugent began his career in Lewisville ISD, where he benefited from the mentorship of Clay Paul and Dick Clardy. Mr. Neugent is a native Texan, having begun his musical training under Joe Gunn at Harwood Junior High and his father, Tom Neugent at Trinity High School in HEB ISD. He received his bachelor’s degree, cum laude, from the University of North Texas. As an undergrad, he also taught lessons and was a marching tech for the L.D. Bell Band under the mentorship of his future in-laws Joseph & Catherine Grzybowski.

Nathaniel enjoys spending time with his wife, Nicki, Band Director at Cross Timbers Intermediate, and his son, Connor, who is a freshmen Music Ed major at Oklahoma State and member of Carolina Crown Drum and Bugle Corps.
