Strengthening Individual Musicianship and Ensemble Performance Through Creativity

Clinic Synopsis:

This session will challenge participants to examine beliefs about the role of creative musicianship in ensembles. Grounded in research, topics will include the nature of creativity, the effects of playing by ear on musical literacy, strategies for engaging students in improvisation and composition, and the creative performance of standard repertoire. Models for designing creative learning experiences to develop individual student musicianship and enhance ensemble performance will be presented.

William Bauer - Biographical Information

Dr. William I. Bauer is the Area Head for Music Education, Director of the Online Master of Music in Music Education program, and Professor in the School of Music of the University of Florida, where he teaches undergraduate and graduate level classes in music education. Previously he served on the music education faculty at Case Western Reserve University, Ball State University, and Radford University. A native of Northeast Ohio, Bauer taught instrumental (band and orchestra) and general music for eight years in the Ohio public schools. Dr. Bauer's book, Music Learning Today: Digital Pedagogy for Creating, Performing, and Responding to Music, was published in 2014 by Oxford University Press. His research and pedagogical writings appear in prominent journals such as the Journal of Band Research, the Music Educators Journal, the Journal of Research in Music Education, UPDATE: The Applications of Research in Music Education, and the Journal of Music Teacher Education. He is currently a member of the editorial boards of the Journal of Research in Music Education and Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education. Bauer has presented at numerous conferences and other events throughout the U.S. and internationally including The Midwest Clinic, conferences of the National Association for Music Education, the International Society for Music Education, and various state music education association conferences. He is an active member of many professional organizations including The National Association for Music Education, the Florida Music Educators Association, and the Society for Music Teacher Education. His major areas of interest and research include instrumental music education, the applications of technology to music education, music teacher education, and music cognition. He continues to perform on the euphonium and trombone and is also the founder and former conductor of the Wadsworth (Ohio) Community Band.

Barry Hartz - Biographical Information

Dr. Hartz is a member of the music education faculty in the School of Music of the University of Florida. His research focuses on innovative means of developing music literacy and ensemble performance. Prior to teaching in higher education, his high school and middle school bands earned superior ratings in Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) adjudicated events, performed at OMEA state conferences, commissioned new works for concert and jazz ensembles, and presented clinics at universities in Ohio and Michigan. Dr. Hartz earned his Ph.D. from Case Western Reserve University in 2015 and National Board Certification in 2007. In 2013 he was recognized by OMEA as the Outstanding Music Educator for the state of Ohio. He has conducted honor bands in Ohio and Kentucky, presented clinics at state and national conferences, and published articles in Contributions to Music Education and Music Educators Journal.
