Alphabet Soup - LGBTQ+ - An Open and Honest Discussion on the Topic for the Music Teacher

Clinic Synopsis:

LGBTQ+ topics in 2019 for the classroom teacher . . . identify concerns, define terminology, and discuss strategies to approach this topic with a goal of creating a safe, respectful welcome space for music learning. In addition to the moderator and Mr. Oakley, there were be representatives of the LGBTQ+ community to share their experiences and respond to questions from attendees. The goal is to help music educators navigate the world of LGBTQ+ persons as they come out in their schools.

David McBee - Biographical Information

David E. McBee is currently the Secretary of the Lesbian and Gay Band Association (LGBA) a position that he has held for 8 years. He is a member of and a former president of DC's Different Drummers (DCDD), the LGBTQ community band in our nation's capital. He has been a member of that band since 2000. Mr. McBee was graduated from West Virginia University with a BA in Liberal Arts and followed that with a Masters in Library Science from the University of Maryland in 2000. Since that time he has worked as a librarian with a variety of federal agencies. Over the years Mr. McBee has served in a variety of roles in DCDD and is currently on the Membership Committee. It is important that new and potential members feel welcome as well as serving existing band members. Because the band is composed of LGBTQ and Straight members there is effort to create a band that is a safe space for all members. In a safe environment musicians can help find their true potential. David McBee lives in Washington, DC with his husband George.

Anthony Oakley - Biographical Information

Anthony Oakley is finishing his fifth season as the Conductor of the Capitol Pride Symphonic Band. He is a native Washingtonian, who pursued his undergraduate and graduate degrees in Music Education and Conducting from the University of Maryland, College Park. He has been a high school band and orchestra director for 18 years. Under his baton, his ensembles have performed in the Washington Metropolitan area as well around the United States, consistently receiving numerous honors and cultivating a reputation for musical excellence. As a student of conducting, Anthony has studied with Dr. Michael Votta, Mr. John Wakefield, and Dr. L. Richmond Sparks. He has attended workshops and clinics under such notable conductors as Virginia Allen, Marin Alsop, Frank Battisti, Eugene Corporon, David Effron, Frederick Fennell, Donald Hunsberger, Anthony Maiello, and Mark Scatterday. In the summer of 2012, Anthony was selected as a participant in the Conducting Workshop for Music Educators, at The Juilliard School, in New York City. Anthony has taught students who have been accepted to and have continued their education at such prestigious institutions as The Aspen Music Festival and School, Berklee College of Music, Carnegie Mellon University, Cleveland institute of Music, The Eastman School of Music, Interlochen Center for the Arts, The North Carolina School for the Arts, Peabody Conservatory, The Tanglewood Institute, and more. In addition to being an educator, Anthony is highly sought out as a guest conductor, adjudicator, clinician, and freelance trumpet player around the D.C. metropolitan area. He is a member of the Maryland Music Educators Association, the Maryland Band Directors Association, the Maryland Orchestra Directors Association, the National Band Association, and the Conductor’s Guild.

David Triplett-Rosa - Biographical Information

David Triplett-Rosa has taught secondary instrumental music for the past eighteen years.  Fourteen of those years were spent as a high school band director with a F.B.A rated Superior State Concert and Jazz Band, F.M.B.C. finalist as well as B.O.A. participants.  He is currently the new director of bands at Barrington Middle School and the founder and conductor of the Tampa Bay Pride Band and Tampa Bay Symphonic Winds. His responsibilities include concert programming, two hour weekly rehearsals, and wind literature preparation for seven community performances throughout the year.

David Triplett-Rosa graduated from Fort Myers High School IB in Fort Myers, Florida. Mr. Triplett-Rosa later graduated with a Bachelor of Music Education (magna cum laude 1999), certificate in Clarinet Performance, Minor in Psychology, and Master in Music Education degree (summa cum laude 2011) from The Florida State University College of Music, where he studied Wind Band Conducting with Dr. Patrick Dunnigan, Richard Clary, and Dr. Andre Thomas and Music Education Research with Dr. Clifford Madsen.

Among his other responsibilities as a music educator and conductor of a community band, he is an active certified music adjudicator for the Florida Bandmasters Association, Hillsborough County Supervising Teacher, first year teacher mentor, and highly sought out music consultant throughout Florida. His professional membership includes MENC, FMEA, FBA, FOA, and NEA.  Currently, David Triplett-Rosa holds a board member position with the Lesbian and Gay Band Association in Professional Networking.

He also was the recipient of the Grammy Foundation Director Award in which his band received $10,000 in 2011. In 2016, Mr. Triplett-Rosa was inducted into Kappa Kappa Psi Gamma Nu Florida State University chapter as an honorary member for his efforts in the LGBTQ community bands.
