Mentors: Meeting Educator's Needs Through Opportunities, Resources, and Support
Clinic Synopsis:
The panel will discuss the various ways in which this urban district has utilized a mentorship program to benefit the directors and students in Ft. Worth ISD which is located in Texas and has over 86,000 students. Discussion topics will focus on how the district provides quality mentors for their band & orchestra directors and how this impacts students. Specific information will include how they provide opportunities, resources, and support.
Dick Clardy
- Biographical Information
Dick Clardy is the Director of Instrumental Music for the Fort Worth ISD which is an urban school district in Texas that has a vibrant secondary instrumental music program that is growing in numbers and quality. Students have opportunities to be involved in the instrumental program which includes band, orchestra, and mariachi. Mr. Clardy has an amazing staff of veteran music teachers who's sole purpose is to recruit and mentor our young and emerging secondary faculty. Mr. Clardy also serves on the board of The Foundation for Music Education which is a not-for-profit organization supporting music education and annually recognizes outstanding ensembles through the project entitled Mark of Excellence. Prior to his appointment to Fort Worth, Mr. Clardy spent twenty-seven years developing the band and orchestra programs in Texas. Bands under Mr. Clardy’s direction have performed twice at the Midwest Clinic, the TMEA Convention-Clinic as the TMEA Class 5A Honor Band, the Tournament of Roses Parade, the American Bandmasters Association Convention, the Chicago Symphony Hall and Carnegie Hall. The John Philip Sousa Foundation honored The Colony Band with The Sudler Flag of Honor. Mr. Clardy has championed new works for band from such composers as Robert Linn, William Latham, Martin Mailman, Dan Welcher, Eric Richards and Eric Whitacre. Mr. Clardy served as the President of the Texas Music Educators Association and as the TMEA State Band Division Chair. Mr. Clardy is a member of Phi Beta Mu was elected into the American Bandmasters Association in 1997. The Texas Bandmasters Association honored Mr. Clardy with the Meritorious Achievement Award and induction into the Texas Band Director Hall of Fame In 2016.
Christina Walk - Biographical Information
Christina Walk was named Executive Director of Visual and Performing Arts in July 2014. Starting in 1991, she served the district for 13 years as a band director, 1 year as a music specialist, and 10 years as the Director of Instrumental Music. She has served as a TMEA Region Officer, Interim Conductor of the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary Wind Ensemble, member of the UIL Region 7 Executive Committee, former UIL Assistant Executive Secretary for Music Activities in Region 7, and currently serves on the UIL Region 5 Executive Committee. Ms. Walk is an avid advocate for the arts; works closely with community partners and is active in professional learning for young teachers. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Performance from Northeast Louisiana University and a Master’s Degree in Music Education from the University of North Texas.
Jolette Wine - Biographical Information
Jolette Wine is currently serving as the Instrumental Band Specialist for the Fort Worth ISD Music Department. Prior to coming to Fort Worth, Ms. Wine was the Director of Bands at Birdville High School for 4 years and the Associate Director of Bands at L.D. Bell High School for 2 years. Ms. Wine spent most of her teaching career at the middle school level where she taught in Lewisville ISD, Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD, and Grapevine-Colleyville ISD. Her longest tenure was in Grapevine-Colleyville where she taught for 16 years at both Cross Timbers Middle School and Colleyville Middle School. The Cross Timbers Band placed 3rd in the TMEA Class CC Honor Band competition and the Colleyville Band was named the 1994 Class CC State Honor Band of Texas and performed at the TMEA Convention in San Antonio. Ms. Wine’s professional affiliations include Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, Texas Music Adjudicators Association, and Phi Beta Mu Honorary Bandmasters Fraternity. In addition to her current position in Fort Worth ISD, Ms. Wine is an active consultant, clinician, and adjudicator. She is proud to be a teacher bringing her passion for music to the directors and students she is privileged to work with each day.
Pat Leaverton - Biographical Information
Patrick Leaverton is currently the Strings Specialist for Fort Worth ISD, where he supervises all of the orchestra and mariachi programs in the school district. Previous to this he taught orchestra for 25 years in Arlington ISD where he taught at all levels from fifth grade beginners through high school. The last ten years in Arlington Leaverton was the head orchestra director at Lamar High School. His orchestras have won many awards including multiple Sweepstakes at UIL and Best in Class at national festivals. Mr. Leaverton is a Past President of the Texas Orchestra Directors Association, serving on the executive board from 2010-2015. As a member of the Texas Music Adjudicators Association Mr. Leaverton has evaluated ensembles at UIL across Texas as well as serving on the Committee for Adjudication and Performance Practices. A double bassist, Leaverton has performed with the Waco, San Angelo, Temple and Arlington Symphonies. He resides in Arlington with his wife Lori and their two dog-children.
