Do You Hear What I Feel? Uncovering Instructional Pathways Leading Toward Increased Expressiveness

Clinic Synopsis:

A required asset for the teacher/conductor is an informed opinion of how all facets of musical sound are managed. Experience and careful study provide pathways leading to efficient and meaningful rehearsals that not only emphasize the required focus on technical necessities but facilitate the opening of unexpected instructional strategies. This clinic will address specific ways to increase expression with your ensemble, starting with your youngest band students and beyond!

Erin Cole-Steele - Biographical Information

Currently, Erin is a Senior Educational Consultant for Conn-Selmer Inc. as well as an Educational Clinician for The Hal Leonard Corporation. Previously, Erin Cole-Steele had a very successful career as the Director of Bands at Tapp Middle School in Cobb County Georgia for 22 years. Under her leadership, the Tapp Band had many honors included being selected to perform at the 58th annual Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago, Illinois in December of 2004. While at Tapp, Erin commissioned four pieces of music for the band including Robert W. Smith’s "The Great Locomotive Chase", Frank Ticheli’s "Simple Gifts – Four Shaker Songs". Samuel R. Hazo’s “Ascend” and was part of a consortium of directors to commission Eric Whitacre’s “The Seal Lullaby”. Erin has written chapters for the popular GIA publication series Teaching Music Through Performance and is also currently a contributing editor for Hal Leonard’s Essential Elements method book and interactive website team. Erin is currently in high demand as a guest conductor for honor and all-state bands across the country as well as a clinician and presenter for music conferences all over the world.

F. David Romines - Biographical Information

F. David Romines is Director of Bands and Departmental Co-Chair for the Music, Theatre, and Dance Department at Marywood University in Scranton, Pennsylvania. His responsibilities include overseeing departmental operations and serving as artistic director for the Marywood University Wind Ensemble and Wind Symphony. Romines has directed bands from public and private schools, community groups, collegiate entities, military, and professional organizations. Romines has guest conducted in the United States (36 states) and in Canada, Italy, South Korea, and China. He has served as guest artist in residence at the Sichuan Conservatory of Music in Chengdu, China, Yunnan Arts University in Kunming, China, and Sang Myung University in Seoul, Korea. In 2014, Romines was awarded the Marywood University Distinguished Faculty Award for Distinction in Discipline. In the spring of 2015, Romines founded the Northeastern Youth Wind Ensemble in collaboration with American Youth Ensembles, Conn-Selmer, Inc. and Hal Leonard Music. Romines has twice received the National Band Association's Citation of Excellence for his contributions to the wind band profession. Currently, Romines serves as Educational Advisor and Board Member for the U.S. - China Cultural and Educational Foundation. He is a former member of the editorial board of the Music Educators Journal and serves the John Philip Sousa Foundation as a member of the Sudler Award Committee. Romines earned Bachelor and Master of Music diplomas in Music Education from the University of Tennessee - Knoxville and the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Southern Mississippi where he studied conducting with Dr. Thomas V. Fraschillo. Additional conducting instruction: Richard Blatti, Ray Cramer, Tom Lee, Allan McMurray, and Steven Pratt.
