Percussion Pedagogy from Day One

Clinic Synopsis:

Day One clinics are intended to be short, content-rich, “nuts-and-bolts” presentations to assist instrumental music educators in starting students properly on their instruments. These sessions will also be of great benefit for any teacher in need of a primer for a proven method of achieving success on a wind or percussion instrument.

Flournoy Humphreys - Biographical Information

Flournoy is a percussionist and newly retired band director. She taught 13 years in Arkansas, 1 year in Tennessee, and 19 years in Traverse City, Michigan. Over the years, her students have consistently made All-State bands in Arkansas and Michigan, have consistently received percussion scholarships to Michigan State University, University of Michigan, Northwestern University (Evanston, IL), University of Central Arkansas, Arkansas State University and other universities across the country.  Flournoy has taught beginning percussion class for the past 28 years, marching drum lines for the past 38 years, and beginning band thru high school band for the past 33 years.  Her percussion ensembles have always received first division ratings at solo and ensemble festivals; has been selected to perform at the Michigan Youth Arts Festival as the outstanding Percussion Ensemble three times, and has received multiple 1st place awards for best marching drum line.In 2007, the Traverse City West Middle School Symphony Band was selected to perform at the Michigan Music Conference in Grand Rapids. In addition, both the Concert and Symphony Bands have always received First (I) Division ratings at District and State Festivals. Flournoy has conducted clinics and/or adjudicated in the following states:  Alabama, Kentucky, Florida, Arkansas, Tennessee, Missouri, Mississippi, Illinois, and Michigan. Flournoy holds a Bachelors of Music Education from the University of Central Arkansas (1986) and a Masters in Curriculum, Instruction, and Administration from Ferris State University, Big Rapids, MI (2005). Flournoy resides in Traverse City, Michigan with her wife, Patricia Brumbaugh, has seven dogs (6 Schnauzers, 1 Black Lab), and works at Mawby winery on the Leelanau Peninsula, in the summer.  Flournoy is honored to be invited by The Midwest Board of Directors to present this clinic.
