Who Are We Reaching, Who Are We Teaching

Clinic Synopsis:

This session is will discuss the use of various emotionally sensitive strategies in the performing arts program by outlining some of the complexities involved in teaching students with diverse backgrounds. By discussing various Social and Emotional learning techniques and relatability to students we can begin to find out how we are reaching students with our teaching and how we can better reach those students who may be presenting challenges to the instrumental music classroom.

Jason Walsh - Biographical Information

Jason Walsh is currently the Coordinator of Performing Arts for Metro Nashville Public Schools. He provides support for the music, theatre, and dance content areas. Previously, Mr. Walsh served as a Dean of Students and World Percussion Teacher at John Overton High School. Prior to his appointment in Nashville, Mr. Walsh was Assistant Band Director at Dobyns-Bennett High School in Kingsport, Tennessee. During his tenure at Dobyns-Bennett, he was fortunate to be able to perform at many prestigious events including The Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade, The Tournament of Roses Parade, the Midwest Band and Orchestra international Convention, as well as many state and local festivals. Mr. Walsh received his Bachelor of Music Education from East Tennessee State University and a Master of Arts in Instructional Leadership from Cumberland University. In his spare time Mr. Walsh is an avid Titans fan, and loves to spend time with his family.
