Redefining Student Practice

Clinic Synopsis:

Music is a language. Deeper understanding of the language can be developed through sharing and performance. Traditional practice cards and reflections do not support meaningful development for young musicians. This clinic explores the idea of practice projects and how they can transform and inspire your students to practice the art of performing. Discover new ideas to spark joy in music making for middle school band students while promoting community and leadership in your program.

Candi Granlund - Biographical Information

Candi Granlund is in her 25th year of teaching band and serves as Band Director at Zionsville West Middle School. She was inducted into the Phi Beta Mu International Honorary Bandmasters Fraternity in 2012 and served as co-coordinator for the IBA Jr. All-State Band from 2014-2019 before being elected Vice President of Indiana Bandmasters Association in 2019. Professional honors include the IMEA Outstanding Middle School Music Educator Award, and the prestigious Lilly Teacher Creativity Fellowship. As a part of the $10,000 grant from the Lilly Foundation, Candi traveled to Austria and Hungary to bicycle through the countryside visiting historical sites related to the lives of Mozart, Mahler, and Franz Liszt. She then returned to study the Mozart Bassoon Concerto for a performance of the solo with members of her middle school band. This experience has sparked a passion for additional travel including trips to England, Ireland, Germany, Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Italy, France, Switzerland and Liechtenstein to pursue additional study in music history. Through these multiple trips abroad and music making with people from other countries, Mrs. Granlund has developed a passion for helping students engage in sharing music with others to inspire creativity and deeper understanding. Ensembles under her direction have performed at the IMEA and NAGC conventions and the IMEA/MENC North Central Division Conference and have earned numerous honors and awards at national, state and local festivals and competitions, including the Grand National Adjudicators Invitational.
