Out of the Womb & Into the Classroom: A Panel Discussion

Clinic Synopsis:

Congratulations! You’ve been birthed from student to teacher – now what? Entering the music education profession is exciting, but often overwhelming. You think you have developed the skills to be successful, but find out that you actually need more help. Out of the Womb and Into the Classroom throws a lifejacket to first year teachers that will help them stay afloat. This unique discussion explores “aha moments”,  tangible resources, and uplifting stories from young music educators.

Shiree Williams - Biographical Information

Mr. Shiree X. Williams is currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Wind Conducting at The University of Texas at Austin, under the tutelage of Professor Jerry Junkin. Prior to his enrollment, Mr. Williams served as Director of Bands at Faubion Middle School, and the Associate Director of Bands at McKinney High School in McKinney, TX. A native of Waycross, Georgia, Mr. Williams holds a Bachelor of Music in Music Education degree cum laude from Valdosta State University, and a Master of Music in Conducting (Wind Emphasis) degree from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music where he was the conducting student of Dr. Glenn Price.

Jessica Lee Gonzales - Biographical Information

Jessica Lee Gonzales is currently in her 17th year of teaching in Leander ISD. She serves as the Director of Bands at Four Points Middle School in Austin, Texas, a school that she has served since 2010, when it first opened its doors. Prior to her time at Four Points, she taught at Cedar Park Middle School in Cedar Park, Texas for 6 years. Mrs. Gonzales is graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, where she got her degree in music education and certificate in flute performance. She currently lives in Cedar Park Texas with her husband Damian, 2 sons Jason and Trey.

Zach Santos - Biographical Information

Zach Santos is currently in his third year of teaching in Leander ISD. Zach serves as an Associate Band Director at Vista Ridge High School in Cedar Park, Texas where he conducts the Symphonic and Concert Bands. Zach graduated from The University of Texas at Austin and currently lives in Leander, Texas with his fiance Kendall Stevenson, and their two Aussies Hudson and Hooey.

Jennifer Hanford - Biographical Information

Jennifer Hanford is serving her sixth year as an Assistant Band Director at James Bowie High School in Austin, Texas. She directs the Concert Band, Jazz Ensemble 2, and assists with chamber music and the nationally-recognized Outdoor Performing Ensemble. A native of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, Jennifer received her Bachelor's degree from the University of Tulsa and education certification from the University of Arkansas.
