S.H.O.P. Talk - Flute Hacks! A Cheat Sheet for the Beginner Flute

Clinic Synopsis:

Clinicians will discuss commonly used catchphrases when addressing beginner flute topics such as: tone, articulation, posture, hand position, and vibrato. Discussion will include a concise cheat-sheet with troubleshooting advice and steps for success to facilitate delivery for non-flutist and first-year teachers.

Jennifer Villarreal - Biographical Information

Jennifer D. Villarreal, a native of San Antonio, Texas, is currently in her tenth year of teaching and her seventh year on the band staff at Roma Independent School District. Ms. Villarreal's responsibilities as head director at Roma Middle School include directing the Symphonic Winds and beginner band and overseeing the flute studio grades 6-12 for Roma ISD. Under her direction, the Symphonic Winds has been a consistent UIL Sweepstakes recipient. Students in the flute studio have achieved success in the Texas Music Educator's Association All-Region, All-Area, and All-State auditions and earned high ranks at the UIL State Solo & Ensemble Competition. Prior to Roma, Ms. Villarreal began her career at Crosby High School where she directed the Concert Band. In 2012, Ms. Villarreal earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from Stephen F. Austin State University. While at SFASU, she studied flute under Dr. Christina Guenther and served as principal flutist of the Wind Ensemble under the direction of Mr. Fred J. Allen, principal flutist of the Orchestra of the Pines under the direction of Dr. Gene Moon, and was a member of the Lumberjack Marching Band under the direction of Dr. David W. Campo. She has been a finalist in the SFASU Concerto Competition and in 2009 and 2011 performed with the National Intercollegiate Band.

Dulce Rodriguez - Biographical Information

Dulce Rodriguez is Head Band Director at Veteran’s Memorial 9th Grade Academy in San Benito, Texas and Assistant Band Director/Flute Instructor at San Benito High School. During the summer, she serves on the faculty of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Flute Camp. Rodriguez is the founder and creator of the San Benito Flute Fiesta, an annual event that in 2019 brought together over 200 middle and high school students from across South Texas for a full day of clinics and master classes with top guest artists and clinicians from across the nation. Rodriguez received her Bachelor of Music Education from University of Texas at Brownsville, and holds a Master of Music in Flute Performance from Texas Tech University. Her primary teachers include Dr. Lisa Garner, Dr. Cristina Ballatori, and Ms. Celeste Canant. She is a member of the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) and the Texas Band Masters Association (TBA). Dulce serves in the Youth and Engagement Committee for National Flute Association (NFA) and has recently been selected to help host Youth Day clinic during the 2022 NFA Conference in August.
