Not Enough Students for a Jazz Band? Why Not Start a Salsa Ensemble!

Clinic Synopsis:

This presentation is for educators that might have a need to start an ensemble with limited knowledge and instrumentation. The clinic is designed to be a plug-and-play demonstrations including music notations, musical terms, and applications that can be applied to their music program curriculum, jazz ensemble or even wind band by breaking the content down to it's simplest form.

Richard De La Riva - Biographical Information

Richard De La Riva is a native of Brownsville, TX., and is currently an Assistant Band Director at Harlingen High School South where he serves as the high brass instructor and Director of the Cano Gold Raven Band and Co-Director for the Harlingen South Salsa Ensemble. Mr. De La Riva has served as composer/arranger in residence for HCISD for four consecutive years. Prior to his appointment at Harlingen High School South, Mr. De La Riva served as Assistant Director for the Hanna High School Band in Brownsville, Director of Bands in Clark County ISD in Las Vegas, Nevada. While living in Las Vegas, he has served as Composer in Residence and principal trumpet for the Desert Winds Symphony, CoPrincipal for the North Las Vegas Stake Orchestra, served as a member of the Las Vegas Brass Band, and adjunct in the Las Vegas Philharmonic. He has performed and recorded under the Klavier label with the University of Nevada Las Vegas as principal trumpet for the UNLV Wind Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra, and Brass Ensemble under the direction of Thomas Leslie, Taras Krysa, and Takayoshi “Tad” Suzuki. Mr. De La Riva has also performed with musicians such as Eric Marienthal, Will Kennedy, Russell Ferrante, Peter Schickele, and Edgar Meyer. His passion for Latin music has led him to become the founder of the Son Montuno Latin Orchestra, which is comprised of music educators from the Rio Grande Valley. He has performed in the Annual Brownsville Latin Jazz Festival with his Latin Orchestra for four consecutive years. He also serves as an active member of the Rio Grande Valley Jazz Orchestra.

Raul Liendo - Biographical Information

Mr. Raul Liendo is an assistant band director at Harlingen High School South, specializing in percussion. He is a native of Laredo, Texas and has a degree in Music Education from Texas A&M University - Kingsville where he was an active percussionist/drummer in all their jazz bands. In his time there, he performed with various guest artists at the annual TAMUK Jazz Festival (Claudio Roditi ’06, Wayne Bergeron ’07, Paquito D’Rivera ’08, Bill Reichenbach ’09, Steven Hawke *Fall ’09, Jeff Hamilton ’10). He also attended Texas State University in San Marcos as a Graduate Student where studied the history and performance methods of popular Latin Music styles (Salsa, Merengue, Bossa Nova) and was an active performer in Salsa Del Rio, the top performing Latin ensemble at Texas State, where he performed with Latin Grammy performing artist: Poncho Sanchez. Aside from his other percussion duties at Harlingen South, he is the founding director of Ritmo Gavilán - Harlingen South's first Salsa Group, now in their 8th year.
