Clinic Synopsis:

Creating and maintaining a culture of success and excellence in a school music organization requires day to day, even hour to hour nurturing and attention. Every aspect of the organization must represent this approach and success. In this clinic, we will share proven strategies, examples, techniques and methods that will help install and grow a culture of excellence throughout the organization.

Bob Medworth - Biographical Information

Bob Medworth retired in 2018 after serving as the band director at Northview High School (formerly Brazil HS) for 41 years. During that time his marching bands were Indiana State Finalists 39 times and won 10 state championships, while the concert ensembles received consistent 1st Division Ratings. His drum corps involvement as a teacher and caption supervisor has included The Star of Indiana, Blue Devils, Carolina Crown, and Madison Scouts. Bob currently serves on the staff of the Canton Bluecoats. Bob was also a member of the Brass Theater and Blast! Instructional staffs as well as serving at many camps and clinics throughout the United States. He has received recognition in education including the WTHI Golden Apple, the Rose Hulman Institute of Technology Outstanding High School Teacher Award, Wal-Mart Educator of the Year Award, VFW District Seven Teacher of the Year and was a 1995 State of Indiana Sagamore of the Wabash presented by Governor Evan Bayh. Bob served as President of the Indiana High School Color Guard Association for over 20 years and is a member of their Hall of Fame. While serving as the Girls Varsity Basketball coach at Northview from 2001 to 2007 Bob was twice named WIC Conference Coach of the Year. In the summer Bob is a Head Clinician for Smith Walbridge camps. In his free time as a Tour Director for Music Travel Consultants he has taken groups to locations including New York City, Ireland, the Outback Bowl and the Rose Bowl. Bob and Ruth Ann (teacher and color guard director at Northview) reside in Brazil, IN.

Matt Harloff - Biographical Information

Matt is an assistant director for all five concert bands at the Avon High School. The Avon High School Wind Symphony has had the privilege of performing at the Indiana State Concert Band Championships and was awarded the Indiana State School Music Association Concert Band State Champions 3 times. Matt lead the Avon HS Brass Choir as a performing ensemble at the 2015 Midwest Band & Orchestra Convention. He is also the director of Avon HS Indoor Winds who has been awarded 5 IPA State Championships & 3 WGI Scholastic World Class Championships. Mr. Harloff is also an assistant director to The Avon Marching Black & Gold where the group has won multiple state championships, has been a consistent Bands of America Grand National Finalist who has finished in the top 3 the last 15 consecutive years, and won the Bands of America Grand National Championship in 2008, 2009 & 2010. In 2003, Matt joined Carolina Crown Drum & Bugle Corps as the Brass Caption Head. Matt, with the support of management, a committed staff and talented members, has built CrownBRASS to be one of the elite programs in the country. The Carolina Crown Brass Section has won the Jim Ott Memorial Award for Excellence in Brass 7 times. Carolina Crown is a consistent Drum Corps International World Class Finalist and celebrated their first ever DCI World Class World Championship in the summer of 2013. Matt was a performing member of the DCI World Champion Star of Indiana Drum & Bugle Corps from 1989-1995. Matt severed as the drum major in 1993. Matt Harloff is proud to be a Yamaha Performing Artist.

Barry Houser - Biographical Information

Barry L. Houser is the Associate Director of Bands, Director of the Marching Illini, Director of the Fighting Illini Athletic Bands, and Clinical Associate Professor of Music where his responsibilities include conducting a number of concert ensembles in the Illinois Bands program, the Athletic Bands, and the 375 member Marching Illini in addition to teaching marching band procedures. Professor Houser’s teaching experience encompasses both extensive public school and university experiences. A native of Indiana, Professor Houser served as Director of Bands and Performing Arts Director at NorthWood High School in Nappanee, Indiana, where his bands developed a reputation for great musicianship which in turn earned the program state and national recognition. Prior to his position at NorthWood, Houser served as the Assistant Director of Bands at Buchholz High School in Gainesville, Florida. Bands under Houser have performed at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, the NBC Today Show, the ISSMA State Marching Finals, and the Indiana Music Educators State Convention. Other performances include the Indianapolis 500 Parade, the Chicago Thanksgiving Day Parade, the Outback Bowl Parade and Halftime Show, the Hollywood Christmas Parade, the Washington DC National Memorial Parade, Chicago Bears Halftime shows, and performances with Maynard Ferguson, the Dallas Brass, Canadian Brass, Boston Brass, Gregg Potter, Douglas Yeo and many other talented artists.
