Elevate Your Plan to Meet the Needs of Every Student: Juggling Unique Learner Needs to Ensure Success and Belonging

Clinic Synopsis:

Lack of time to plan lessons and develop relationships with students are some of teachers’ biggest struggles. Three simple steps to organizing lessons and assessment will ease that burden. Attendees will be given free templates to execute planning and assessing along with simple tips to make classrooms a culturally responsive and safe place for students to be vulnerable and desire to grow as a musician and person.

Denese Odegaard - Biographical Information

Denese Odegaard served music education for 40 years as orchestra teacher and Performing Arts Curriculum Specialist in Fargo (North Dakota) Public Schools. While on the American String Teachers Association Board (Secretary), she was chair of the Committee on School Orchestra and Strings and received the ASTA Citation for Leadership twice. Her involvement in NAfME includes serving as North Central President and Research Advisor for the 3-5 grade 2014 National Music Standards writing team. From 2016-2018, she was the National President. In North Dakota, Odegaard served as Executive Director of the North Dakota Music Educators Association for ten years and President of NDMEA (2001-2003). She also served as President of North Dakota String Teachers Association (1997-1999). Odegaard was member of the state music standards writing team in 2000 and 2019. Odegaard authored Curriculum Writing 101: Assistance with Standards-based Music Curriculum and Assessment Writing for Band, Choir, Orchestra and General Music (GIA); co-authored the ASTA Curriculum (Alfred); edited Kaleidoscope: A Collection of Standards-Based Lesson Plans for the K-7 General Music Classroom (Alfred); and co-authored the ASTA Curriculum Assessment Companion e-book for string music educators (ASTA). She has presented curriculum and assessment sessions at international, national, and state conferences including Midwest, ASTA, TMEA, TODA, AMLE, ISME, and three Symposiums on Assessment in Music Education.
