Teach Your Percussionists to Play with 4-Mallets Using the Stevens Technique

Clinic Synopsis:

Learn the most widely used 4-mallet technique in the world from its creator, marimba virtuoso and pioneer, Leigh Howard Stevens. The Stevens technique is used by professional and student percussionists alike; however, more often than not many young percussionists develop bad habits from poor instruction. LHS will show you tips and tricks to properly teach your students the four Stevens stroke types, mechanics of movement, shifting, interval changing, and one-handed rolls.

Leigh Stevens - Biographical Information

It is difficult to find any aspect of marimba technique, repertoire or instrument design that has not been profoundly changed by the work of Leigh Howard Stevens. According to Time Magazine, “Stevens has revolutionized the playing of the instrument.” His one-handed rolls, mallet independence, contrasting roll types and birch-handle mallets are now commonplace in modern marimba playing. His original concepts are outlined in his book, Method of Movement, which has been published in six languages. In addition to performing, composing and teaching, he designs instruments and mallets for Malletech, a company he founded. He has been awarded ten U.S. Patents, featured in numerous periodicals such as The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times, and among many other honors, has been elected into the Percussive Arts Society Hall of Fame.
