It's the Bridge, Not the Break: Going from Band to Orchestra

Clinic Synopsis:

This session is designed for the band director teaching or conducting an orchestra. This session aims to provide takeaways that can be used immediately in the classroom. The clinicians will address four primary areas of importance, including cultural differences between band and orchestra, a string instrument overview, selecting music, providing transferable pedagogical skills, and sharing criteria for selecting music.

Timothy Heath - Biographical Information

Dr. Tim Heath is the Director of Bands and Assistant Teaching Professor of Music at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. At Wake Forest, he oversees all aspects of the band program and is a conducting faculty member. Dr. Heath has experience conducting chamber ensembles, orchestras, and bands as a conductor. Currently, he is a conductor for the Triad Area Medical Orchestra of the Piedmont Area in North Carolina. Previously, the Director of Athletic Bands and Assistant Professor of Music Education at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama. Dr. Heath is an active clinician and adjudicator for concert bands. As a music educator, Dr. Heath has presented sessions and research at the state and national levels, published in The Instrumentalist, The National Band Association Journal, and Percussive Notes. Dr. Heath holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, a Master’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, a Doctorate from The University of Alabama, and a Professional Artist Certificate in Conducting from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. He serves on the Small College/University committee of the College Band Directors National Association. As a performer, Dr. Heath regularly performs with the Piedmont Wind Symphony, a professional Wind Ensemble based in Winston-Salem, NC. His percussion background includes the Tuscaloosa Symphony, the Alabama Winds, the Greensboro Philharmonia, and other concert ensembles. Dr. Heath is a Conn-Selmer Education Clinician.

Jordan Ford - Biographical Information

Jordan Ford is a native of Knoxville, TN. She attended Samford University in Birmingham, AL, receiving her Bachelor of Music Education. She taught general music and strings for 4 years in Birmingham City Schools before becoming the Orchestra Director in Alabaster City Schools in the fall of 2021. Jordan received her Masters in Special Education with a concentration in Early Childhood Special Education from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in the spring of 2022. In addition to playing with area orchestras and chamber ensembles, Jordan is the Alabama Symphony Orchestra Youth Orchestra Manager. Jordan resides in Chelsea, AL, with her music teacher husband and three-year-old son.

Kevin Fitzgerald - Biographical Information

Kevin is the newly-appointed Associate Conductor of the Jacksonville Symphony, and will debut with the orchestra in the 2022-23 season. He is also the founder and Music Director of the contemporary music ensemble ÆPEX Contemporary Performance, and continues to develop relationships with orchestras, opera companies, and arts organizations nationwide. In the 2021-22 season, Kevin conducted education concerts with the North Carolina Symphony and a summer concert with the Rochester Philharmonic. Also in 2021-22, he was a cover conductor for the New York Philharmonic and the Minnesota Orchestra, an Assistant Conductor at Des Moines Metro Opera, and made his subscription debut with the Alabama Symphony Orchestra, of which he was Assistant Conductor for four seasons.
