Clinic Synopsis:

The U.S. Naval Academy Band’s Brass Quintet will present an engaging clinic demonstrating how your student-led brass quintet can get up and running right away. Introductory repertoire, fundamental chamber music skills, and instrument specific topics are just the beginning of this clinic. We will also discuss how this vital chamber ensemble will enhance your music program while providing your students the musical framework and building blocks necessary to become well-rounded musicians.

United States Naval Academy Band Brass Quintet - Biographical Information

The United States Naval Academy Band’s Brass Quintet promotes brass chamber music through education and performance, and is a highly popular and versatile USNA Band ensemble. The Brass Quintet regularly lends musical support to Naval Academy functions, in addition to performing concerts and clinics, collaborating with composers in the commissioning of new works, and working on recording projects. The Brass Quintet's résumé includes performances at the US Army Band’s Tuba-Euphonium Workshop, International Trumpet Guild Conferences, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the National Music Festival, Maryland State Music Teacher’s Association Conference, the Texas Bandmasters’ Association Convention in San Antonio, Texas, Maryland Trumpet Day, DAR Constitution Hall, Washington College, Shepherd University, Catholic University of America, James Madison University, the Armed Forces School of Music, and the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island. Over the years, audience members have included U.S. presidents, military leaders, and foreign dignitaries.

Musician First Class Dan Arute - Biographical Information

A native of Dothan, Alabama, Musician 1st Class Daniel Arute received a Bachelor of Music Education degree in 2009 from Troy University, and a Master of Music degree in Trumpet Performance in 2012 from the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati, Ohio. His primary teachers include James Zingara, Alan Siebert, and Phillip Collins. Prior to his service in the Navy, Arute performed extensively throughout the Midwest, having performed with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, the Cincinnati Opera, Dayton Philharmonic, Southwest Michigan Symphony, Queen City Chamber Opera, Tacoma Symphony Orchestra, Ann Arbor Symphony, and numerous other professional ensembles. Arute maintained an active teaching studio as an instructor with Mason High School, and has performed with summer programs such as the National Orchestral Institute and the International Wind Orchestra. Arute began his military music career with the U.S. Navy in 2015. After completion of Musician “A” school, he reported to Navy Band Northwest in Silverdale, Washington, where he performed with the brass quintet, marching and ceremonial units, and was a featured soloist with the wind ensemble on numerous occasions throughout Navy Band Northwest’s eleven-state area of responsibility and southwestern Canada.

Senior Chief Musician Davy DeArmond - Biographical Information

Senior Chief Musician Davy DeArmond began trumpet studies with his father at the age of 10. After graduation from Lenoir City High School in 1998, he attended the University of Tennessee and received a Bachelor of Music in trumpet performance, studying with Cathy Leach. He earned a Master of Music from Mannes College of Music in New York, NY, studying with Robert Sullivan. He completed a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Kentucky in 2012, studying with Mark Clodfelter. Additionally, he studied with Ray Mase and Kevin Cobb at the Aspen Music Festival.DeArmond has performed with the Charleston Symphony, Connecticut Ballet, Lexington Philharmonic, Knoxville Symphony, Chattanooga Symphony, Annapolis Symphony, Delaware Symphony, Richmond (IN) Symphony, and was Principal Trumpet of the Oak Ridge Symphony. He has played with the Washington Symphonic Brass, Signature Theatre Orchestra and Musica Viva. He has toured nationally with Mr. Jack Daniel's Original Silver Cornet Band and the USAF Heartland of America Band. DeArmond was the recipient of the Performance Award from Mannes College of Music and was awarded a fellowship at the Aspen Music Festival for the 2004 season, serving as Principal Trumpet of the American Academy of Conducting at Aspen. He was the winner of the Columbia Bach Society Concerto Competition, the Tennessee Trumpet Competition (Solo and Duet Divisions), and the Celebration of Excellence Competition at the University of Tennessee. In 2000, he was a finalist in the National Trumpet Competition.

Musician First Class Erika Loke - Biographical Information

Musician 1st Class Erika Loke grew up in Thousand Oaks, CA. She holds a Bachelor of Music from the University of Southern California, a Master of Music from Wichita State University, and a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Maryland, all in Horn Performance. Her teachers include Louise MacGillivray, Dr. Steven Gross, James Thatcher, Dr. Kristy Morrell, Dr. Nicholas Smith, Gregory Miller, and Philip Munds. Loke has performed extensively throughout the greater DC area with ensembles including the Baltimore Symphony, Washington Concert Opera, Alexandria Symphony and Fairfax Symphony. She has been a contributing artist with the International Horn Society at several symposiums and has served as the Military Matters editor for The Horn Call journal. As a proponent of new music, she enjoys performing works by living American composers and commissioned two works for the Wagner tuba and one for horn and electronics. Loke has also recorded the world’s first album of music for horn and fixed media electronics, “Alien Loop de Loops.” Prior to living on the east coast, Loke played second horn with the Wichita Symphony and as a member of the Lieurance Woodwind Quintet. As an undergraduate, she played third horn with the YMF Debut Orchestra and actively participated in the USC Thornton Music Outreach Program. During her undergraduate and master programs, Loke participated in summer music festivals including Aspen, Sarasota, Banff, Kendall Betts Horn Camp, and CCM Spoleto.

Musician First Class Dan Coffman - Biographical Information

Musician 1st Class Daniel Coffman is a native of Oak Park, Illinois. He received a Bachelor of Music in trombone performance from Indiana University in 2015, where he studied with Peter Ellefson. In 2017, he earned a Master of Music and Performance Certificate from the Eastman School of Music, studying with Larry Zalkind. Coffman played a large portion of the 2016-17 season with Symphoria (Syracuse, NY) and freelanced in the Rochester area. At Eastman, he was a member of the Remington Trombone Quartet, which was a finalist in the 2017 International Trombone Association Quartet Competition and was runner-up in the 2017 American Trombone Workshop Quartet Competition. Coffman can be heard playing lead trombone on CDs Fly! by Mitch Shiner and Intercambio by Wayne Wallace. He has performed with the York Symphony Orchestra (PA) and has also attended the National Orchestral Institute and Festival, Bar Harbor Brass Week, and the Rafael Méndez Brass Institute.

Musician First Class Aden Beery - Biographical Information

Musician 1st Class Aden Beery hails from Greensboro, North Carolina. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Music Performance from DePaul University and is an alumnus of the Interlochen Arts Academy. His principal teachers include Floyd Cooley, Gene Pokorny, and Thomas Riccobono. Beery has performed with the National Symphony, Baltimore Symphony, National Philharmonic, Annapolis Symphony, Fairfax Symphony Orchestra, Civic Orchestra of Chicago, Valley Symphony, Classical Orchestra of Chicago, and the Soli Deo Gloria Brass. In 2017, he performed as a part of the Fellowship Brass Quintet at the Aspen Music Festival and studied side-by-side with the American Brass Quintet. In previous years, he attended other music festivals, including the Eastern Music Festival and the National Youth Orchestra of America.
