The tuba section has been, and remains, the solid foundation of any strong concert band. It is essential that our young tuba players build good habits from day one. This session will provide guidance on starting tuba players properly, including recommended equipment, breathing and buzzing exercises, etude and method books, and troubleshooting common problems in young tubists.
James Land

James Land is the Assistant Professor of Tuba and Euphonium at Western Illinois University (WIU). As an active performer, Dr. Land performs regularly with the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra and many other professional ensembles throughout the United States, and is the tubist in the LaMoine Brass Quintet, the faculty brass quintet in residence at Western Illinois University.
Dr. Land is an active member of the International Tuba and Euphonium Association, and state and district Music Education Associations, and has been a featured performer, adjudicator, and presenter at many international, regional, and state conferences. Additionally, Dr. Land has performed as a soloist with numerous ensembles, most recently the WIU Wind Ensemble, WIU Concert Band, the Saint Louis Low Brass Collective, and has presented recitals and masterclasses at colleges and universities throughout the United States.
Prior to his appointment to WIU, Dr. Land was the Instructor of Tuba and Euphonium at Belmont University in Nashville, TN. Dr. Land earned both the Bachelor of Music and the Master of Music degree in Tuba Performance from the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music, the Performance Diploma from Indiana University where he was also the Associate Instructor of Tuba and Euphonium, and the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Memphis.
In the summer months, Dr. Land serves on the faculty of the Indiana University Summer Music Clinic, the WIU Community Music School Summer Camps, and has served at the Interlochen Arts Camp in Interlochen, Michigan.
