From Emerging to Essential: New Repertoire You Need to Know

Clinic Synopsis:

Staying current on repertoire can be difficult. In the past several years, hundreds of works have been added to required music lists nationwide. This session will provide a curated list of recently approved works, highlight emerging composers, and equip directors and composers with tools to advocate for new additions. Join us to expand your programming, make connections, and reaffirm the purpose of our work with students.

Brandon Houghtalen - Biographical Information

Dr. Brandon Houghtalen currently serves as Director of Athletic Bands and Associate Director of Bands at the University of Texas at El Paso. He previously held conducting positions at Abilene Christian University, the Georgia Institute of Technology, and the University of New Mexico. In 2018, he founded the On the List Project, a group of teachers that assists states as they work to strengthen their required music lists. His professional activities include frequent engagements as a guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator, as well as conference presentations. He has been featured on the podcasts Trilloquy and The Score and professional development events sponsored by CBDNA, TMEA, and NAfME. His research on James Reese Europe and the 369th Infantry Regiment Band led to the creation of new performing editions of The Memphis Blues, The St. Louis Blues, and Clef Club March. Houghtalen earned degrees in music education and conducting from the University of Tennessee, University of Colorado, and Arizona State University. His primary conducting teachers were Allan McMurray and Gary Hill. He is a member of CBDNA, TMEA, TBA, Phi Mu Alpha, and serves as the Sponsor of the Alpha Chi Chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi.

Tremon Kizer - Biographical Information

Tremon Kizer serves as the Associate Director of Bands, Director of Athletic Bands, and Associate Professor of Music at the University of Central Florida (UCF). In addition to serving as the lead administrator for the UCF athletic band program, he conducts the Symphonic Band, teaches courses in music education and conducting, and observes music education student interns. In addition, he serves as the Associate Director for the School of Performing Arts at UCF. Under his direction, the UCF Marching Knights has the largest membership in university history with over 420 students. The Marching Knights has also been recognized and featured at the College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA) Southern Division Conference. In addition to his work at UCF, Kizer serves on the National Band Association (NBA) Revelli Composition Contest Selection Committee, the NBA IDEA Committee, the NBA Research Review Board, the Board of Directors for the Florida Youth Symphony Orchestra, and a CBDNA Task Force that researches current trends with recruitment. On the state level, he serves as the Florida Bandmasters Association Commissioning Committee Chair and is on the MPA Music Selection Committee. He is an active guest conductor, adjudicator, and leadership consultant of well over 200 clinics. Kizer has been a guest conductor for numerous district, regional, and state honor bands along with professional ensembles such as the United States Army Band. He has been on staff for several music camps, drum major clinics, and collegiate and high school concert and marching band camps.

Jaclyn Hartenberger - Biographical Information

Dr. Jaclyn Hartenberger (Fulbright scholar, 2023–2024) is a highly sought performer, with artistry that has attracted significant invitations throughout the world. Under her leadership, ensembles consistently perform at a high level, and her programs are enthusiastically received. Performances have been described as “superb,” “praiseworthy,” “terrific,” “impressive,” and displaying “artistry.” Jaclyn Hartenberger is the newly appointed conductor for the University of Melbourne’s Wind Symphony at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music in Melbourne, Australia. During her eleven years as the Associate Director of Bands at the University of Georgia (UGA) she conducted the Wind Symphony (WS) and taught conducting. The WS’s accomplishments and contributions include being: a finalist for the American Prize in Ensemble Performance, the annual featured ensemble at Georgia’s Middle School Band Festival, a featured ensemble at the Georgia Music Educators Association’s state music conference, and an annual invited performer to UGA’s Performing Arts Center’s Saturday Morning Kids Club series. While at UGA, Jaclyn has premiered and recorded major works for the wind repertoire including Kevin Day’s Concerto for Wind Ensemble (which received a Pulitzer Prize nomination) and Adam Gorb’s Concerto for Violin, Viola and Wind Ensemble.
