From Emerging to Essential: New Repertoire You Need to Know
Clinic Synopsis:
Staying current on repertoire can be difficult. In the past several years, hundreds of works have been added to required music lists nationwide. This session will provide a curated list of recently approved works, highlight emerging composers, and equip directors and composers with tools to advocate for new additions. Join us to expand your programming, make connections, and reaffirm the purpose of our work with students.
Brandon Houghtalen
- Biographical Information
Dr. Brandon Houghtalen currently serves as Director of Athletic Bands and Associate Director of Bands at the University of Texas at El Paso. He previously held conducting positions at Abilene Christian University, the Georgia Institute of Technology, and the University of New Mexico. In 2018, he founded the On the List Project, a group of teachers that assists states as they work to strengthen their required music lists.
His professional activities include frequent engagements as a guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator, as well as conference presentations. He has been featured on the podcasts Trilloquy and The Score and professional development events sponsored by CBDNA, TMEA, and NAfME. His research on James Reese Europe and the 369th Infantry Regiment Band led to the creation of new performing editions of The Memphis Blues, The St. Louis Blues, and Clef Club March.
Houghtalen earned degrees in music education and conducting from the University of Tennessee, University of Colorado, and Arizona State University. His primary conducting teachers were Allan McMurray and Gary Hill. He is a member of CBDNA, TMEA, TBA, Phi Mu Alpha, and serves as the Sponsor of the Alpha Chi Chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi.
Tremon Kizer - Biographical Information
As a highly respected music educator and conductor, Tremon currently serves as the Associate Director of Bands, Director of Athletic Bands, and Associate Professor of Music at the University of Central Florida (UCF). Dr. Kizer oversees UCF’s athletic band program, conducts the UCF Symphonic Band, and teaches advanced courses in music education, conducting, and mentorship for student interns. Additionally, he plays a pivotal role as the Associate Director of the UCF School of Performing Arts, where he contributes to the success of over 800 students majoring in music and theatre. As an clinician, adjudicator, and leadership consultant, Tremon has conducted clinics globally. He has been a featured conductor for district, regional, and state honor bands, as well as professional ensembles, including as guest conductor of the United States Army Band. His expertise also extends to summer music camps, and drum major clinics for collegiate and high school band programs. Tremon has presented research and conducted workshops at major conferences, including the Midwest Clinic International Band and Orchestra Conference, the College Band Directors National Conference (CBDNA), the Southern Division CBDNA Conference, and the CBDNA Athletic Band Symposium. His insights into music education has been published and recorded in Marching Arts Education, Teaching Music, and as a consultant for Leaders Creating Leaders LLC.
Jaclyn Hartenberger - Biographical Information
Dr. Jaclyn Hartenberger (Fulbright Scholar,
2023–2024) is an internationally acclaimed conductor known for her dynamic
artistry and inspiring leadership. Currently the conductor of the University of
Melbourne Wind Symphony and principal instructor of conducting for the Australian
Defence Force School of Music, her performances and teaching bring passion,
precision, and infectious energy. Previously Associate Director of Bands at the
University of Georgia, she led the UGA Wind Symphony to national acclaim.
A St. Louis native, Jackie’s
musical journey began with her mother, Dr. Aurelia Hartenberger, as her first
teacher. She holds degrees from the University of North Texas and The
University of Texas at Austin, where she studied with Jerry F. Junkin. She is
the artistic director and creator of The JH Collective—an innovative ensemble
and American Prize finalist—collaborating with top soloists and institutions
like the Martha Graham Dance Company. Jackie Hartenberger continues to shape
the future of wind music through performance, education, and collaboration
around the globe.
