It's A Small Band World After All

Clinic Synopsis:

This clinic is to highlight a small band program in Chicago Public Schools. This clinic is to discuss how to navigate, build, and maintain a band program through the fourth largest school district in America with no feeder system and limitations that many small and or large band programs face in large school districts. This clinic is to also give insight and demonstration in the music techniques and ensemble rehearsal process in running a band program with limited instrumentation.

Roger Dekind - Biographical Information

My name is Roger A. Dekind and I am, currently, the Band Director/Music Instructor at Disney II Magnet High School, where I have taught for nearly eight years. I am a graduate of the Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University where my major was Music Education; additionally, I am an alumni from the Merit School of Music. I have studied under Dr. Bonnie Campbell of the Merit School of Music and Vandercook College of Music, as well as with the principal clarinetist of the Lyric Opera of Chicago and Grant Park Music Festival Orchestras, Charlene Zimmerman. The Disney II Magnet High School Music Department is only in its eighth year of existence and compared to other Performing Art High Schools; Disney II is a very young and unknown school. The Disney II Band community is united, supportive, energetic, and dedicated. I am passionate about music, mentoring/educating my students and making Disney II Magnet High School a well known performing arts school in the nation and world. My kids have helped in many different ways, such as helping me push myself to be a better band director; many of my kids look up to me as a role model that gives me the motivation to find better ways to help my kids out with their music interest and find many different opportunities for them to have a successful music career. A Special shoutout to all of the families and band members of the DII Band Community! I do not exist without you and if it isn't for your continued love and support, we do not have a band program at Disney II.
