S.H.O.P. Talk: Expanding the Jazz Canon: Strategies for Programming Works by Women in the Large Jazz Ensemble

Clinic Synopsis:

This session presents practical strategies for programming big band music by women composers and arrangers. Attendees will examine programming and publishing statistics (including data from The Midwest Clinic), discuss access challenges, explore a searchable database of 500+ commercially available works through a live demonstration, and review a curated set of 40 annotated charts spanning all grade levels for immediate use in educational settings.

Brian Lawrence - Biographical Information

Brian Lawrence is an educator, composer, arranger, and performer specializing in jazz and commercial music. He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of North Texas, where he served as a Doctoral Teaching Fellow in Jazz Studies. In this role he taught courses in jazz arranging and piano, directed an ensemble, and performed with the UNT One O’Clock Lab Band. Prior to UNT, he served as Interim Director of Jazz Studies at Central Washington University, worked as a Graduate Assistant at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and taught public school music in the greater Seattle area. Under Brian's leadership, the CWU Jazz Band received a 2022 DownBeat Magazine Student Music Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Jazz Ensemble. An active clinician, Brian has presented at the Jazz Education Network Conference, the Washington Music Educators Association Conference, at numerous regional and national events, and has been featured on Microsoft’s Education Blog. Brian’s music has been performed by prominent artists and ensembles including Tia Fuller, Joshua Redman, Lyle Lovett, Allison Miller, Michael League, the U.S. Air Force Band Airmen of Note, and the U.S. Army Blues. His work has been featured at The Midwest Clinic, the Tournament of Roses Parade, Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, the London New Year’s Day Parade, and on NBC’s The Today Show. His work reflects a commitment to artistic excellence, creativity, and leadership in music and music education.
