Musicianship in the Middle

Clinic Synopsis:

Sequential teaching is desirable and challenging in the middle years of string playing. This can be middle school or early high school. We present on how to inspire students to acquire the necessary skills for middle-level literature through carefully paced exercises and musical excerpts.

Gail Barnes - Biographical Information

Dr. Barnes is professor of Music Education and Director of the USC String Project. She received her BM and MM from the University of Michigan and her PhD in 1998 from the Ohio State University. Dr. Barnes teaches courses in stringed instrument methods and orchestra literature. Dr. Barnes’ professional interests include community and school orchestra programs and access to music education for under-served youth. In addition, she is a co-author of Measures of Success for String Orchestra (published by The FJH Music Company), a method book for young string players. She is the founder of a forum for string and orchestra teachers on Facebook that has over 4,000 members. Dr. Barnes continues to work with student-aged musicians in her role as Director of the USC String Project. In addition, she has conducted All-State Orchestras in Florida, Georgia and Michigan. In 2014, her peers at the USC School of Music voted her the Cantey Outstanding Faculty member.

Carrie Lane Gruselle - Biographical Information

Carrie Lane Gruselle coaches Chamber Music for young musicians at the Lawrence Community Music School in Appleton, Wisconsin. She is a past president of Wisconsin-ASTA and former lead teacher for the Lawrence University String Project, She is co-author of the FJH method series: Measures of Success® for Strings, as well as Superior Strings in Sixteen Weeks, and consults for the FJH string catalogue. Her arrangements and compositions are studied and performed regularly worldwide.
