In this clinic, I’ll share strategies for building and sustaining a successful band program in a Title I environment. We’ll discuss key elements of a thriving program, effective teaching fundamentals, and the importance of relationship-building. Special focus will be on connecting with students facing challenges and collaborating with administrators. Strong administrator support is crucial for the program’s success.
Gilbert Sanchez

Gilbert Raul Sanchez is the current Director of Bands at Resnik Middle School in the Southwest Independent School District in San Antonio Texas. Mr. Sanchez earned both his Bachelor’s in Music Education and his Master’s in Educational Administration from the The University of Texas at San Antonio. Mr. Sanchez began his teaching career at Irving Middle School, located on the west side of San Antonio in the San Antonio Independent School District. In 2009, he was named the "Rising Star" Teacher of the Year at Irving—a prestigious award given to a first-year teacher. Four years later, in 2013, he was named Teacher of the Year for Washington Irving Middle School. His Honor Bands earned numerous UIL Sweepstakes awards at Concert and Sight-Reading contests. A highlight of his career at Irving came in 2012, when his Honor Band was named a TMEA State Honor Band Finalist, placing 10th in the 2C category. In 2016, Mr. Sanchez was selected to become the first Director of Bands at Resnik Middle School in Southwest ISD. Under his leadership, the Resnik Band program has flourished, consistently receiving UIL Sweepstakes awards in Concert and Sight-Reading contests. In 2018 and 2025, Mr. Sanchez was named "Teacher of the Year" for Resnik Middle School. In addition, in 2025 Mr. Sanchez was named the “Secondary Teacher of the Year Finalist” for Southwest ISD. Mr. Sanchez is an active clinician for bands in the San Antonio area, serves as a UIL adjudicator, a region band clinician, and a summer music director at the UTSA Summer Band Institute. When not working with students or performing, Mr. Sanchez enjoys spending time with his wife, Maritza, and their son, Raul.
