Small School, Big Band: Practical Strategies for Building a Successful Jazz Program

Clinic Synopsis:

Many directors want to offer jazz ensemble experiences, but face challenges such as small enrollment or limited instrumentation. This clinic demonstrates how strong jazz programs can thrive in small schools through creative recruitment, flexible instrumentation, and efficient rehearsal strategies. Using the Raul Yzaguirre School for Success Jazz Ensemble as a live demonstration group, practical tools for teaching improvisation and building a sustainable program will be shared.

Harold Sedano - Biographical Information

Harold Sedano was born and raised in Houston, Texas, and began his musical journey in the second grade when he first picked up the cornet. His passion for music deepened after discovering drum corps through the Phantom Regiment and performing in jazz band during his high school years. These experiences inspired him to march with Phantom Regiment, further shaping his musicianship and dedication to the marching arts. Sedano later attended the University of North Texas, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Performance. He also toured internationally in Japan for multiple summers as a performer with BLAST!. Currently based in Houston, Sedano founded the jazz program at Raul Yzaguirre Schools for Success Early College High School, where he continues to inspire young musicians. While teaching, he completed a Master’s degree in Jazz Pedagogy from the University of Arkansas at Monticello. In addition to his work as an educator, he remains an active performer and is a member of the Houston Latin Jazz Orchestra. Through education and performance, Sedano remains committed to building musical opportunities within his community, giving students the same life-changing experiences that shaped his own musical path.
