Clinic Synopsis:

Independent and self-published composers have transformed wind band music over the past two decades. But how do composers develop a distinctive voice in a crowded field, and how can educators support these voices while meeting student needs? Featuring four leading wind band composers, this panel explores three core principles shaping their music and careers: craft, intention, and vision, offering insight into creating lasting repertoire that connects deeply with students.

Joseph Parisi - Biographical Information

JOSEPH PARISI is internationally recognized as a conductor, educator, and performer whose work spans wind, brass, and jazz ensembles. A Curators’ Distinguished Professor at the University of Missouri–Kansas City Conservatory, he conducts the Conservatory Wind Ensemble, serves on the conducting and music education faculty, and leads programs in arts management and entrepreneurship. His artistry reflects a deep commitment to collaboration, expressive excellence, and the advancement of both new and established repertoire, with particular emphasis on working with living composers and fostering meaningful artistic partnerships. Since 2014, Parisi has served as principal conductor of Summit Brass, where he has championed contemporary music and led commissions and premieres that have expanded the brass repertoire. Recent recording projects have reached international audiences through digital platforms, reflecting his ongoing dedication to artistic innovation, collaboration, and global engagement. He also serves as principal conductor of the internationally award-winning Fountain City Brass Band. With an extensive discography as conductor and performer, Parisi has collaborated with distinguished artists worldwide. This stylistic breadth informs his teaching and leadership, enriching his work with students and professionals alike. Throughout his career, he has remained devoted to mentoring the next generation of musicians and educators, guided by a belief in the transformative power of music and its continued evolution.

Nicole Piunno - Biographical Information

Nicole Piunno (b. 1985) is a composer who views music as a vehicle for exploring the realities of life. Her work reflects life’s paradoxes and the ways opposites intertwine—light and dark, past and present, beauty and brokenness, chaos and order. Through a distinctive harmonic language and contrapuntal textures, she mirrors the complexity of the human experience. Piunno holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in composition and a Master of Music in theory pedagogy from Michigan State University, as well as a Master of Music in composition from Central Michigan University. She also earned a Bachelor of Music in Music Education with an emphasis in instrumental music. A frequent guest at universities and festivals across the United States, her music for wind ensemble has been performed by leading ensembles worldwide, including premier U.S. military bands, and featured at major conferences and all-state programs. Her chamber works have been presented internationally at prominent professional gatherings and festivals. Piunno’s compositions appear on numerous commercial recordings released on major classical labels, reflecting her growing presence in contemporary concert music

James David - Biographical Information

Dr. James M. David (b. 1978) is a leading American composer for winds and percussion who serves as professor of music at Colorado State University. His works have been performed at over eighty national and international music conferences throughout the world. Awards and recognition include the 2025 CBDNA Frederick Fennell Prize, the 2022 NBA William Revelli Award, three-time finalist for the Sousa-ABA Ostwald Award, an ASCAP Morton Gould Award, and election to the American Bandmasters Association. Previous commissions and collaborations include works for the US Air Force, Army, and Navy Bands, the Dallas Winds, the Osaka Shion Wind Orchestra, Joseph Alessi (NY Philharmonic), John Bruce Yeh (Chicago Symphony), James Markey (Boston Symphony), and hundreds of university music faculty and ensembles. His works are represented on over twenty commercially released recordings on the Naxos, Summit, Mark, Albany, Parma, MSR Classics, GIA Windworks, and Luminescence labels and are published by Murphy Music Press, C. Peter Meechan - Biographical Information

Canadian-British composer Peter Meechan (b. 1980) is widely performed worldwide. His music has been commissioned and recorded by leading orchestras, wind ensembles, and brass bands, and appears on over 130 recordings. A prize-winning composer, he has received major international awards and honors, including recognition from prominent band associations. Meechan holds degrees from the Royal Northern College of Music and the University of Salford and resides in Canada.

Aaron Perrine - Biographical Information

Aaron Perrine writes vividly colorful, rhythmically driven music inspired by the soundscapes and allure of the natural world. A two-time recipient of the American Bandmasters Association Sousa/Ostwald Award, he has also received honors from CBDNA and ITEA for his contributions to the wind repertoire. His music is regularly featured at major national and regional conferences, including ABA, CBDNA, TMEA, and the Midwest Clinic, as well as at numerous all-state programs. Perrine’s works for soloist and wind ensemble have gained significant recognition, with performances by leading military and professional ensembles in the United States and abroad. His concerto writing, in particular, has attracted international attention through high-profile premieres and touring performances. A native of Minnesota, Perrine holds degrees from the University of Iowa and the University of Minnesota. In 2024, he was elected to membership in the American Bandmasters Association. His music continues to be widely performed, reflecting his distinctive voice and ongoing impact on contemporary wind literature.
