This session will explore key elements of flute sound production, including embouchure setup, air support, and airstream direction. Band Directors will learn to identify, diagnose, and correct common tone issues in student flutists. Through demonstrations and practical exercises, attendees will gain a clearer understanding of the physical and acoustical principles behind flute tone, along with effective strategies they can immediately apply in band rehearsals, sectionals, and lessons.
Mariana Gariazzo

Dr. Mariana Gariazzo is flutist, educator, and arts leader recognized for her work as a performer, pedagogue, and advocate for new music by Latin American composers. She holds a Bachelor of Music from the Universidad Nacional de Cuyo, a Master of Music from Yale University, and a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Texas at Austin. Gariazzo enjoys a growing reputation as an engaging and thought-provoking clinician, presenting at festivals, conferences, and universities across Europe, Asia, Latin America, and the United States. Her research centers on contemporary Latin American repertoire and she actively collaborates with composers in commissioning, performing, and recording new works for flute. As a performer, she has appeared with ensembles including the Austin Symphony Orchestra, Oak Ridge Symphony, Santa Fe Symphony, Philharmonia Orchestra at Yale, New Music New Haven, and the Argentine National Orchestra. As Program Chair of the 53rd National Flute Association Convention, she curated a program of more than 250 events attended by 3,000 flutists from 37 countries. She previously served as President of the Chicago Flute Club and Executive Director of the International Low Flutes Festival. Gariazzo currently holds teaching positions at Elmhurst University, the University of Illinois Chicago, and VanderCook College of Music.
