Four-time GRAMMY Music Educator of the Year Award finalist and 2025 CMA Music Teacher of Excellence Award winner Matthew Shephard shares how small school music programs can create BIG opportunities. Teaching in a small village of 700, he believes culture, consistency, and community matter more than size or budget. Matthew W. Shephard has served as Director of Bands at Meridian Public Schools in Sanford, MI since 2001 and joined the adjunct faculty of Bowling Green State University in 2025. He holds a Bachelor of Music Education and a Master of Music in Conducting degrees from Central Michigan University and was honored with the 2026 CMU College of Arts and Media Outstanding Alumni Award. A four-time finalist for the GRAMMY Music Educator Award (2023–2026), Mr. Shephard was also recognized nationally as a recipient of the 2025 Country Music Association Music Teacher of Excellence Award. His leadership has earned numerous state honors, including the 2015 Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association (MSBOA) District V Teacher of the Year, finalist for State Teacher of the Year, and recipient of the ASBDA Michigan Chapter Award of Excellence. Under his direction, Meridian’s bands consistently earn superior ratings at festivals, with one-third of the high school student body participating in the band program. The Meridian HS Symphonic Band has been selected to perform at the Michigan Music Conference four times, while the Meridian HS Jazz Ensemble has appeared annually at the Detroit Jazz Festival since 2012. Mr. Shephard is the author of Do-It-Yourself Trombone, a beginning method book for adult learners published by Hal Leonard. As a featured keynote speaker, clinician, and guest conductor, he has presented throughout the Midwest, sharing strategies for building thriving music programs in small schools through positive culture, student engagement, and musical excellence.An active leader in music education, Mr. Shephard is a member of the Recording Academy, ASBDA, NBA, JEN, and NAfME. He most recently served as State President of the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association.
