Performer Bio Synopsis

The Douglas Anderson School of the Arts Wind Symphony is the premier wind and percussion performing ensemble at Douglas Anderson School of the Arts and is located in Jacksonville, FL. Douglas Anderson (DA) is a dedicated arts magnet program within Duval County Public Schools where students are admitted based on auditions and academic achievement. In 2016 DA was recognized as a Grammy Gold Signature School, designating it as one of the top three high school music programs in the country. The school has been recognized as the Grammy National Winner twice and Gold winner two other times. While at DA students participate in a multitude of instrumental ensembles including jazz band, percussion ensemble, symphony orchestra, chamber groups, electronic music ensembles, and pit orchestra, as well as take classes in music theory, keyboard, electronic music, music history, recording and AP Music Theory. Students in the Wind Symphony have weekly masterclasses with local professional musicians and music educators, many of whom are members of the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra. The DA Wind Symphony resume of invited performances include the Midwest Clinic (3 times), the CBDNA/NBA Southern Division Conference, the NAfME National Conference, the FMEA Annual Conference and In-service Clinic, Music For All Festival (twice), the International Music Festival and others.

Conductor's Bio

Ted Shistle is beginning his fourth year as Director of Bands at Douglas Anderson School of the Arts and his 15th year as a music educator. Ensembles under his direction have performed at the CBDNA/NBA Southern Division Conference (twice), at International Music Festival in Carnegie Hall, and have consistently earned superior ratings at all FBA District and State level events. Mr. Shistle is active as an adjudicator and clinician including conducting the 3rd annual Nine-Star Honor Band for the Florida Bandmaster's Association. In addition to his duties as a band director, Mr. Shistle is active as a bassoonist making frequent appearances with the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra and performing chamber music. Additionally Mr. Shistle serves as the chair of the Concert Music Committee for the Florida Bandmasters Association. He is a proud member of FBA, FMEA, NAfME, Phi Beta Mu, and and honorary member for Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. He earned his bachelor's degree in Bassoon Performance from the Conservatory of Music at UMKC, and a Master's in Music Education from Florida State University.
