Flute Tips and Tricks: Making Tone and Pitch Development Fun Using Something Old and Something New

Clinic Synopsis:

An exploration on teaching a full flute tone using both the traditional approach along with extended techniques. This session will introduce how to use extended techniques to supplement your flute students' traditional tone studies. We will demonstrate fun exploratory exercises for students and have lesson plan examples for all ranges of abilities.

Olivia Boatman - Biographical Information

Dr. Olivia Boatman is the Assistant Professor of Flute at Mississippi State University and Instructor of Flute at Belhaven University. In addition, she teaches a growing private woodwind studio in Starkville and Clinton, MS. Olivia enjoys serving area high schools through private lessons, master classes, and adjudication. She is a member of the Mississippi Wind Symphony, Starkville Symphony Orchestra, and Mississippi Baptist Symphony Orchestra. She is currently serving on the Flute Club Committee for the National Flute Association. Previously she served as the Woodwind Instructor and Assistant Band Director at Hinds Community College in Raymond, MS and Flute Instructor at Grambling State University in Grambling, LA and Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina, KS. Olivia holds a Doctor of Music from Florida State University, a Master of Music from Arkansas State University, and a Bachelor of Music Education from Mississippi State University. Additionally, she has specialized study certificates from Florida State University in Music Education and Leadership as well as College Teaching. In addition to teaching, she has worked in the music industry as a Sales Consultant for Flute Authority, the North American distributor of Miyazawa, Sankyo, Trevor James Flutes, Hamming, and Song.

Keith Hanlon - Biographical Information

Dr. Keith Hanlon is a professional Flute Technician and Educational Consultant at Flute Authority in Coralville, IA, a Low Flutes Artist and Clinician for Trevor James Flutes, and a former US Army Bandsman. Dr. Hanlon is also the flutist for the Derecho Wind Quintet, principal flute for the Ottumwa Symphony Orchestra, part of io ensemble (historical flutes) and Keystone Wind Ensemble, and a member of the faculty at Brightpoint Community College. Dr. Hanlon is the co-founder of The Flute Examiner. Delta Omicron, Phi Mu Delta, Pi Kappa Lamda DMA, WVU; MM, VCU; BA, IUP.
