Stage AND Screen - Incorporating Film with Concert Music

Clinic Synopsis:

This session will be about repertoire, resources, and techniques to incorporate film in concert. Through the discussion of several completed projects incorporating film with concert music, we will explore current repertoire that utilizes film and the techniques to sync the film with the performing ensemble. We will discuss different sync technologies and propose new ideas for utilizing film in the future.

Timothy Shade - Biographical Information

Dr. Timothy Shade is currently the Director of the School of Music and Director of Bands at Wichita State University in Wichita, Kansas. Previous appointments include Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Alhambra Orchestra (FL), Visiting Director of Orchestras at Florida Atlantic University, and Director of Instrumental Music at Bethel College (KS). He has garnered praise for his exciting programming, engaging personality and “marvelous conducting.” Equally comfortable in the orchestral and wind realms, Shade has worked with The Greater Miami Symphonic Band, The New River Orchestra, The Naples Philharmonic, The Frost Wind Ensemble, The Florida Youth Symphony, The Wichita Wind Ensemble, The Newton Mid-Kansas Symphony Orchestra, and the Delano Chamber Orchestra. Under Dr. Shade's leadership the Wichita State University (WSU) Wind Ensemble has performed for the College Band Director's National Association Southwest Regional Convention (2018, 2022), the Kansas Music Educator's Association In-Service Workshop (2023), and the Mid-South Horn Conference (2018). The WSU Wind Ensemble has been active with premiering new works and cross-genre programming. Recent projects include the premiere of KHRONOS composed by Justin Hall featuring Da'Kneisha Blount, the premiere of Symphony No. 2 by James Syler, the US Premiere of Adam Gorb's opera The Path to Heaven, and a collaborative project with dancers and film entitled Dante's Nightmares and Dreams. Future projects include repertoire featuring film, interactive dancers, and live scenting.
